SEM Analysis

  • What is SEM analysis?

Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) analysis is a high-resolution imaging technique used to examine the microscopic structure and composition of materials. In asbestos testing, SEM enables identification of individual asbestos fibres within a sample as well as their type, size, and morphology. SEM allows for precise visualisation of asbestos fibres at magnifications thousands of times greater than traditional optical microscopes.

  • When should you use SEM analysis instead of bulk sampling?

Bulk sampling and SEM analysis serve different purposes in asbestos testing. Bulk sampling involves taking larger samples of materials such as textured coatings, floor tiles, sheets and boards to confirm if they contain asbestos. This is the type of sampling conducted on all asbestos surveys and standard sampling jobs, it is a cost effective way of identifying if a material contains asbestos.

SEM analysis is used when sampling dust or taking swab samples from areas that are thought to be contaminated with asbestos fibres. Bulk sampling and analysis methods are not suitable for dust and swab samples as bulk sampling requires a specific material to be sampled. SEM analysis is used when precise identification and characterisation of asbestos fibres is required.

SEM analysis provides detailed information about the asbestos fibres’ morphology, size, and type. It can be used to identify individual asbestos fibres within a sample and enables the differentiation between asbestos and other non-asbestos fibres present in the sampled material.

In summary, bulk sampling confirms the presence of asbestos, while SEM analysis offers a deeper, microscopic-level understanding of asbestos fibers, aiding in precise identification. SEM analysis is crucial in ensuring the safety of environments, enabling proper mitigation or removal strategies, and protecting individuals from potential exposure to asbestos fibres.
