Asbestos Advice for Homeowners

If you own or rent a property it’s important to know if your property contains asbestos so you can avoid disturbing it during routine use, maintenance or refurbishment. If you're about to buy a home, it's also vital to check for asbestos. Asbestos is a naturally occurring mineral fibre that was put into thousands of products for its durability and insulation properties and was used in the UK up until 2000. Most of these products are building materials that are commonly found in the home, these include products such as:

  • Textured Coatings (Artex)

  • Floor Tiles and Adhesive

  • Roof Sheets

  • Boarding

  • Pipe Insulation

  • Electrical Equipment

  • Soffits and Guttering

We recommend that you do not disturb or attempt to remove such materials yourself, as this can release asbestos fibres into the air and pose serious health risks.

If you are planning any renovations or remodelling projects, always have the relevant areas tested for asbestos before commencing work to avoid disturbing hidden asbestos materials.
