What is air testing?
Air testing refers to collecting air samples to measure airborne fibres. This technique is commonly used in the context of asbestos air monitoring, particularly during activities such as removal, abatement, or remediation.
Air sampling devices are strategically placed within the work area or the vicinity of asbestos containing materials. These devices typically consist of a filter that captures airborne particles, including asbestos fibres, over a specific time period. The collected samples are then analysed to quantify the concentration of asbestos fibres in the air.

Types of air testing
Clearance sampling: Part of the 4-stage clearance process on completion of licensed asbestos removal work
Background sampling: To establish the prevailing fibre concentration. This is often carried out before an activity which may lead to airborne asbestos contamination.
Leak testing: To assess the integrity of the asbestos enclosure to make sure it remains intact and that airborne fibres do not escape.
Reassurance sampling: Conducted to confirm that the residual fibre concentrations are not above safe levels.
Personal Monitoring: Carried out to check employees’ airborne exposure to asbestos and to confirm working procedures effectively minimise release of asbestos fibres.
